Browse and Share Content from Getty Images with its Brand New App - Stream

After releasing earlier this year the embed feature, Getty  Images, the world’s leading visual communications company,  as they call themselves, takes another step forward launching its first consumer app - Getty Images Stream.

Available for iPhone and iPad devices running iOS8, Getty Images Stream is a free app designed for personal use.

Stream has simple features and allows you to access and share legally Getty ́s library of curated news, sport and entertainment images via mobile devices. The same functionality was brought to Getty´s iStock photo app back in July.

With Stream you can search, save, get alerts, share and embed for non-commercial purposes your favorite images with your friends on social media channels and blogs.

You can even play slideshows of any stream and search results on Apple devices using Apple AirPlay, Apple TV included.

There is one thing you can ́t do, though: save photos to your camera roll. You have to “copy” a photo, which automatically saves an embed code to your clipboard. That gives Getty the control over the image.

“Our new, free Stream app delivers Getty Images’ stunning news, sport and entertainment photography straight to your iPhone and iPad, giving you a front row seat to the latest events around the globe,” Getty Images Chief Technology Officer Steve Heck said. “Imagery is the world’s most spoken language. People love our award-winning pictures and Stream makes it easier than ever to view – and share – the world through the lens of Getty Images photographers.”

Getty is definitely setting a trend, going from strictly paid images to free shareable content in an effort to get more images posted online. Down the road this can lead to more revenue for Getty (through incorporated ads, for example).

Smart move? It's for us to see.
