Is Photography that Important?

Have you ever wondered what photography means to us? Is that important, especially in social media era? Hm, maybe or maybe not.

One thing is sure though, photography is part of our lives so deeply that we cannot imagine a world without it.

To prove the impact photography has in our lives, a French newspaper (Libération) issued a paper without any photographs! Extreme, right? Not if you want to make a point or a statement. I'll go for the last one: we cannot live without images Period!

Life is made of images and, we - the humans - have found a way to immortalize them forever through photography.

Whether is photojournalism, landscape or portrait photography, or any other kind of photography, we need pictures in every part of our lives. We need to freeze expressions, sentiments, faces and the world around us.

What would have been the world without photographs from the WTC crash? How about Sandy hurricane or the recently Yolanda typhoon?

How about weddings and portraits of the loved ones? How can you explain your son his grandpa' face without a photograph?

How would you know the beauties this world has to offer without photography?

Let´s go back to the French newspaper.

For the first time in their history, Libération newspaper printed an entire edition without photographs. Released on same day as the opening day of Paris Photo (November 14), the no photos edition of Libération showed the importance of photography in journalism, as well as in all areas of our lives, I might add.

So, what does cross your mind when you see a newspaper with empty frames instead of photographs? “An uncomfortable silence” says Brigitte Ollier, a journalist Libération's Culture desk.

"Libération vows an eternal gratitude to photography, whether produced by photojournalists, fashion photographers, portraitists, or conceptual artists. Our passion for photography has never been questioned - not because it's used to beautify, shock or illustrate, but because photography takes the pulse of our world.” – the French newspaper explained its decision on the front page.

Professional photography is needed and NO, smartphones cannot replace it.

With this edition, Libération succeeded in its attempt to show the power and importance of photography in understanding world events. Here you can read the entire article published by Business Insider. And you? What do you think about French newspaper decision?
